The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden announced today the election of four new trustees, creating the largest and most international board in the Museum’s 42-year history. This milestone moment sees the addition of Danny Goldberg (Sydney), Isaac Lee (Miami), Juliana Terian (New York) and Xiang-Dong (X.D.) Yang (Hong Kong), whose election brings the total number of active board members to 28.  Their appointment coincides with a record-setting financial year for the Hirshhorn, which grew its fundraising by 80% last year to reach $7.1 million.

Under the leadership of director Melissa Chiu, the Hirshhorn’s board has seen the fastest growth in over twenty years, with an unprecedented eight trustees from the D.C. community, including the newly elected Board Chair Daniel H. Sallick, underscoring the museum’s commitment to its local audience. The Hirshhorn’s board also features diverse supporters from around the U.S. and internationally, including United Arab Emirates, Canada, and Indonesia, whose commitment reinforces the Museum’s efforts to expand its engagement with historically underrepresented areas of modern and contemporary art, particularly in Latin America and Asia.

“The fact that the Hirshhorn is able to thrive with a board that is now the largest and most international in its history is a testament to the museum’s extraordinary momentum as a world-class institution,” said Sallick. “I look forward to welcoming these new voices as we build on what it means to be a truly global institution.”

“As the Hirshhorn leads into the 21st century, the ambition and expertise of our board is vital to our continued growth,” said Chiu. “Each of our new members brings a unique engagement with and knowledge of the art and artists of our time, as well as a keen understanding of how Hirshhorn fits into the global landscape. Their dedication to our future is something we are proud to both recognize and celebrate.”

The announcement comes on the heels of the museum’s Nov. 3 gala in New York, and the planned acquisitions of an ambitious range of works by global and new media artists, including Ed Atkins, Enrico David, Jacqueline Humphries, Jesper Just, Joseph Kosuth, Shirin Neshat, and Krzysztof Wodiczko.
