All ARTLAB+ programs are free of charge. Prior to taking part, all participants must complete the following forms:
- For teens ages 13-17: ARTLAB+ Registration Form and ARTLAB+ Parent Consent Form
- For teens ages 18-19: ARTLAB+ Registration Form and ARTLAB+ Participant Consent Form
Wednesday – Friday, 4 – 8 pm (February 1 – December 15, 2017)
Open Studio is a drop-in session during which teens can use equipment for their own creative projects, work to earn digital certifications, collaborate with new friends, or just relax and play games. Staff artist mentors are present to assist with projects and other technical needs. Equipment and digital media available for teens to explore during Open Studio include professional photo and video gear, music and recording equipment, video games, sewing and fashion design tools, and graphic and 3D design resources. Advance registration is not required on the first visit, but registration is required for continued participation in the program. Please check social media for updated opening and closing times.
Multiple application-based opportunities year round
ARTLAB+ teens with skills in video production, graphic design, video game design, 3D design, and other digital arts may be invited to apply to paid production team opportunities. These opportunities have given teens the real-world experience of working on projects at a variety of Smithsonian museums, such as the Turquoise Mountain exhibition at the Freer and Sackler Galleries, as well as planning and producing events at the Hirshhorn, including a performance by Lil’ Buck.
Studio Assistants Internship Program
Tuesdays, 4 – 7 pm (March 7 – May 16, 2017)

Created for teens who are ready to take their skills to the next level, the Studio Assistant Internship Program provides teens with highly specialized tech skills, leadership opportunities, and the chance to be involved directly with events and exhibits happening at the Hirshhorn. The program culminates in a Spring Showcase event on May 20, 12:00 – 3:00 pm (free and open to the public). For more information, please visit our Facebook page.
Multiple registered opportunities year round
ARTLAB+ occasionally offers registration-based workshops focused on specific digital mediums. Workshops are led by professional-level artist mentors. Past workshops have focused on 3D design and zines.
LRNG User Testing Production Team
Every other Monday, 4:30 – 6:30 pm (March 6 – May 15, 2017)
Stipend: $100 Visa gift card, meals provided

ARTLAB+ teens are invited to become user testers and take part on the ground floor of a new movement in digital education in partnership with LRNG, a national organization seeking to revolutionize and gamify learning. LRNG has created several online learning playlists consisting of a series of XPs (experiences) that users can do online. Users who complete an entire playlist earn a linkable, digital badge that can enhance a their professional resume or college application. ARTLAB+ is hosting six user testing sessions this Spring.
