Highlights Include May 18 and Sept. 9 Discussions with the Artist

The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden presents films and programs in conjunction with the major exhibition “Shirin Neshat: Facing History,” which runs May 18–Sept. 20. Events are held at the Hirshhorn’s Ring Auditorium unless otherwise noted. All are free of charge. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Shirin Neshat: Meet the Artist
Monday, May 18; 6:30 p.m.
The Iranian-born, New York-based artist discusses her practice as part of the museum’s continuing Meet the Artist series.

Curator’s Tour of “Shirin Neshat: Facing History”
Friday, May 22; 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m.
For this special Friday Gallery Talk, associate curator Melissa Ho leads a tour of the exhibition.

Gender stereotypes are upended in this dark-humored adult farce about the People’s Democratic Republic of Bubunne, a land where women rule, men are subservient and horses are worshipped.

Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak introduces the artist’s adaptation of Shahrnush Parsipur’s magical realist novel about Iranian women during the 1953 coup.

Film: Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation (2011)

A couple must choose between leaving Iran with their child or staying with a parent who has Alzheimer’s.

Panel Discussion: Portraying History: Gender and Politics in Iran

Moderated by Tyler Green
This program brings together artist Shirin Neshat and Nazila Fathi, former Tehran-based New York Times correspondent and author of The Lonely War:  One Woman’s Account of the Struggle for Modern Iran, to discuss the role of women in Iranian society. Moderator Tyler Green is the host of the Modern Art Notes Podcast. Presented in collaboration with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
