Roger Brown
Aug 12–Oct 18, 1987
This retrospective of approximately 50 paintings and four painted constructions – created from the late 1960s to the present – reviewed the achievements of the Chicago imagist Roger Brown (1941-1997). Brown’s work combined a simplified, almost cartoonlike style with subjects inspired by the contemporary world: skyscrapers and street scenes peopled with mysterious, 1940s-esque city dwellers; tourists amid spectacular skies and landscapes; natural and manmade disasters; biblical themes; and horrific news events, such as terrorism and mass murder.
