Hirshhorn Plaza

Visitors took in two large panels that Arshile Gorkey (1904-1948) created as a WPA project for the Newark Airport in 1936-1937. Titled Aviation, the 10-panel series was the subject of considerable controversy and was subsequently painted over and presumed lost. Rediscovered in 1973, the panels were accompanied in this exhibition by related paintings, studies, and drawings as well as documentary photographs and text. Organized and first presented by the Newark Museum in winter 1978-1979.
