The Animal in Art: Selections from the Hirshhorn Museum Collection

Nearly 90 paintings, sculptures, and graphics were featured in this exhibition, including images of domesticated animals, wild animals, and mythological and fantastic creatures as well as caricatures and abstract works inspired by animal themes. Among the 53 artists represented were Antoine-Louis Barye, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, George Grosz, Andre Masson, Claes Oldenburg, Nathan Oliviera, Francois Pompon, Albert Pinkham Ryder, David Smith, Joseph Stella, and Graham Sutherland. This was one of more than 30 shows presented around the world to mark the conservation efforts of the World Wildlife Fund.
