How to Participate


Production Teams
Multiple application-based opportunities year round

ARTLAB+ teens with skills in video production, graphic design, video game design, 3D design, and other digital arts may be invited to apply to paid production team opportunities. These opportunities have given teens the real-world experience of working on projects at a variety of Smithsonian museums, such as the Turquoise Mountain exhibition at the Freer and Sackler Galleries, as well as planning and producing events at the Hirshhorn, including a performance by Lil’ Buck.

2017 Smithsonian Folklife Video Production Team

ARTLAB+ is partnering with Smithsonian Folklife to create a short documentary style video of the “On the Move” program about migration at the 2017 Folklife Festival on the National Mall.  Click here for more information and to apply. Applications are due June 14.

ARTLAB+ Workshops
Multiple registered opportunities year round

ARTLAB+ occasionally offers registration-based workshops focused on specific digital mediums. Workshops are led by professional-level artist mentors. Past workshops have focused on 3D design and zines.

“Out of the Shadows”

What secrets hide within art? How do artists communicate ideas in unexpected and playful ways? What hidden stories might you discover and share through your own artwork? Join ARTLAB+ this summer for our free summer workshop series for teens Out of the Shadows. Each workshop explores a variety of artistic behaviors and mediums, culminating in an exhibition on the final day.  Space is limited, sign up for one or both workshops today.

 Registration is free. Teens must be between ages 13-19 in order to participate.

Session 1: Shadow Sculptures: Building Kinetic Light Art – WAITLIST ONLY
June 19- 23, Noon-3

During this session, teens tinker with a mix of unusual materials to explore the characteristics of light and shadow. Participants will gain exposure to the physics of construction, the mechanics of motors, and basic electronics as they build sculptures that reveal images in shadow form.

Session 2: Sound Stories: Designing Audio Installations and Environments – WAITLIST ONLY
July 17-21, Noon-3

During this session, teens explore how to tell stories with sound, using the basics of field recording and audio engineering to create unique installations and sound environments.  Participants will get exposure to a variety of recording and amplification technologies while using state of the art software to construct a variety of auditory experiments.
