A round green object at the foreground projects light through a round piece of wood with a colored gel filter at its center.

Play with light and shadow! Find the Art Cart in the Third Level Lerner Room. Young artists will look closely at Hat Rack by Marcel Duchamp. Self-guided materials will encourage experimentation with opaque, translucent, and transparent materials.

Do this at home! Brighten up the darkness with this colorful and playful Mini Art Lesson exploring light. Discover the science of light, shadows, and reflections through artful play. Create.

A light is projected through a green, red, purple and yellow square plastic box onto the white wall beyond.

Until we can gather for Storytime again, the Art Cart offers young artists themed sets of materials. Each week’s Art Cart offers a fresh and fun theme featuring an artwork on view, an art making activity to do at the Museum, and kids projects to extend the fun at home! The Art Cart is free; no registration required. Every Thursday, 10 am–12 pm.

Stroller Parking is available on the Lower Level.

Help us stay safe and healthy! Review Smithsonian health and safety guidelines before your visit.
