“Among the dozen or so New Yorkers leading an exuberant revival in abstract painting, Charline von Heyl stands out for a fearless stylistic diversity.” – Jason Farago, Even Magazine
One of the most inventive artists working today, Charline von Heyl has earned international acclaim for continually rethinking the possibilities of contemporary painting. Her artworks reconsider and challenge longstanding conventions of composition, color, abstraction, beauty, and narrative by employing a unique visual language. Drawing inspiration from a vast and surprising array of sources—including literature, pop culture, metaphysics, and personal history—von Heyl creates monumental paintings that are seemingly familiar yet impossible to classify, offering, in her words, “a new image that stands for itself as fact.”
More than thirty of her large-scale paintings will be included in Charline von Heyl: Snake Eyes, the largest US museum survey of her work to date. Organized in collaboration with the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, this multinational exhibition highlights the significance of von Heyl’s dynamic and constantly evolving practice.
Charline von Heyl will be joined by Hirshhorn Senior Curator Evelyn Hankins to discuss the rigorous, process-based work that has made her one of today’s most groundbreaking painters.
