Recently opened at the Kreeger Museum, TRACES “explores how the past evokes shifting memories while suggesting new and present narratives.” Guest-curated by Sarah Tanguy, the exhibition features eight artists working across painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture, sound, and video, and includes several site-responsive installations. Each work explores the many possible meanings of “trace” by engaging in materials and themes that address displacement, connectivity, and transformation and take on important issues of today to suggest possible futures to come.
Tanguy joins Hirshhorn assistant curator Betsy Johnson for a discussion on the three-year development of TRACES and how her plans for curating and installing an exhibition—largely comprised of new work—evolved during the pandemic.
