Build Day
May 10, 2025 | 10:00 am–4:30 pm

Calling all budding architects: Let’s build! Take a tour of the Enchanted City, a showcase designed and built entirely by elementary school artists in partnership with District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Arts, Boolean Girl, and George Washington University Fab Lab.
Find our city in the historic Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building (AIB; next door to the Museum) from 11 AM–4:30 PM. Find hands-on activities for builders and makers of all ages in Hirshhorn Art School, on the Lower Level of the Museum.
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE ARTS + INDUSTRIES BUILDING?
- 11 AM–4:30 PM | Tour a showcase featuring artwork and Build Day projects by citywide DCPS elementary students. Find student projects in the AIB.
- 1–3 PM | Hear DCPS high school art and architecture students speak about their current projects in a special showcase in AIB’s West Hall.
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE HIRSHHORN?
- 10 AM–2 PM | Want to create your own art and architecture? Head over to Open Studio at the Hirshhorn Art School to:
- create a suspended sculpture from paper, string, LEDs, and other materials with Boolean Girl, inspired by artist Olafur Eliasson’s LED light sculptures.
- learn about 3D printing in a hands-on demonstration by George Washington University’s Fab Lab.
- discover our bricks and blocks building zone for all ages.
Want to explore architecture before or after this event? Try these activities in the classroom or at home!
