ABOUT THE FILM

The rugged, mysterious Swiss mountain valley of Bregaglia, in the eastern region of Graubünden, brought forth an extraordinary artistic dynasty: the Giacomettis. From the family’s patriarch, Giovanni, considered one of the first Impressionists, to the children, Alberto (who revolutionized the world of art with his unique sculptures), Diego, Otilia, and Bruno, they were each endowed with impressive artistic talent. Annetta, the strict matriarch, provided a calming influence within the circle of her loved ones and kept the family together. The intense family bond, embedded in a barren Alpine landscape, created the unique conditions that fostered the family’s artistry, which grew throughout their lifetimes through their work and experiences abroad. The film reveals how this unique and remote region of Switzerland shaped each family member differently and shows how the mountainous landscape inspired the artists who lived there.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Susanna Fanzun is a Swiss screenwriter, director, and producer. Born in Scuol, Switzerland, she is from the same state (or canton) as the renowned Giacometti family. Fanzun grew up speaking Romansh, Switzerland’s national language, spoken by around 60,000 people, which has played a major role in much of her work. For many years, she worked as a journalist and producer for Switzerland’s Romansh-language national radio and television (RTR). For the past couple of decades, Fanzun has focused on documentary filmmaking, and, in 2012, she founded her own production company, Pisoc Pictures. Her documentaries often explore themes related to art, architecture, childhood, Alpine life, and family relationships. Her projects are known for their cultural insights, beautiful cinematography, and intimate portrayals.
