Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden in the fall. Yellow foliage amongst three bronze sculptures.

Recording

Mark Beasley, the Hirshhorn’s Robert and Arlene Kogod Secretarial Scholar, Curator of Media and Performance Art, will lead a conversation exploring intersecting themes of the body, music, and performance, inspired by the Museum’s first exclusively live work by acclaimed contemporary artist Tino Sehgal. This You features a solo female singer who connects with visitors to produce intimate and memorable experiences. Expanding on the work of Conceptual artists, Sehgal employs the voice and movement rather than traditional art materials to create his works.

Beasley will be joined by David Levine, visual artist and theater producer; Julia Simpson, trainer for This You performers; and Drew Daniel, member of the Baltimore-based musical duo Matmos, to discuss methods of staging the body and the historic use of music, from pop to avant-garde, by contemporary visual artists.

Visit the Sculpture Garden prior to the event to encounter this living sculpture for a special extended viewing until 6:30 pm.

Stick around for post-program refreshments and a chance to meet the panelists.

The conversation is part of Wunderbar Together: The Year of German-American Friendship 2018/19. This is a comprehensive and collaborative initiative of the Federal Foreign Office, the Goethe-Institut, and with support of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), highlighting the decades-long relationship grounded in common values, interests and goals.
