The first complete Friedel Dzubas (1915-1994) retrospective comprised 45 works, including his early “calligraphic” work of 1949; all-black canvases; and bold monumental color abstractions of later years. These fluid painterly compositions are his best-known works and are often radically large in scale and imbued with a strongly romantic strain. Dzubas was born in Germany and lived in the United States from 1939 onward. He was involved in New York’s progressive art community during the late 1940s and later lived and worked in Boston.
