Hirshhorn Plaza

This exhibition included 46 figurative and abstract paintings, two objects, and an installation piece by German artist Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) in his first North American retrospective. The works included monumental gestural abstractions, copies of amateur snapshots and newspaper photographs, romantic landscapes and still-lifes, and paintings based on color charts. The installation piece used 48 photographs of famous early-20th-century Europeans. Jointly organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
