Recent Acquisitions, 1986–1988

Artists Milton Avery, Magdalena Jetelová, Tony Cragg, Philip Guston, Martin Puryear, and Stuart Davis were represented in this overview of modern works acquired by the Museum as gifts or purchases since 1986. Among the works were Capriccio Musicale (Circus) by Daniel Vladimir Baranoff-Rossiné, a Cubo-Futuristic painting; Untitled by Jasper Johns, a mementolike box construction showing a collage of printed matter above a cast of a woman’s face; Totem Tone V by Stephan von Huene, which made sounds like a pipe organ for three minutes every hour on the half-hour; and The Sorceress by Jean Tinguely, which vibrated for 10 seconds Monday to Saturday at 11 AM and 2 PM and Sunday at 1 and 3 PM.
