Hirshhorn Plaza

On view were some 75 works, including 43 ceramic sculptures and 26 drawings, collages, and mixed-media works, by California artist Robert Arneson (1930-1992). This major retrospective drew from his work of the preceding 25 years. As a leader of the so-called Funk movement and known for his extroverted, often irreverent portrayals, Arneson championed and developed glazed ceramics as a viable sculptor’s medium, creating – along with Peter Voulkos and others – strictly nonutilitarian objects from potter’s clay. Organized by the Des Moines Art Center.
