PROGRAM
Film: The Giacomettis
Runtime: 104 min.
Q&A: Susanna Fanzun, moderated by Emily Buss, Senior Public Diplomacy Manager at the Swiss Embassy
ABOUT THE FILM
The rugged, mysterious Swiss mountain valley of Bregaglia, in the eastern region of Graubünden, brought forth an extraordinary artistic dynasty: the Giacomettis. From the family’s patriarch, Giovanni, considered one of the first Impressionists, to the children, Alberto (who revolutionized the world of art with his unique sculptures), Diego, Otilia, and Bruno, they were each endowed with impressive artistic talent. Annetta, the strict matriarch, provided a calming influence within the circle of her loved ones and kept the family together. The intense family bond, embedded in a barren Alpine landscape, created the unique conditions that fostered the family’s artistry, which grew throughout their lifetimes through their work and experiences abroad. The film reveals how this unique and remote region of Switzerland shaped each family member differently and shows how the mountainous landscape inspired the artists who lived there.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Susanna Fanzun is a Swiss screenwriter, director, and producer. Born in Scuol, Switzerland, she is from the same state (or canton) as the renowned Giacometti family. Fanzun grew up speaking Romansh, Switzerland’s national language, spoken by around 60,000 people, which has played a major role in much of her work. For many years, she worked as a journalist and producer for Switzerland’s Romansh-language national radio and television (RTR). For the past couple of decades, Fanzun has focused on documentary filmmaking, and, in 2012, she founded her own production company, Pisoc Pictures. Her documentaries often explore themes related to art, architecture, childhood, Alpine life, and family relationships. Her projects are known for their cultural insights, beautiful cinematography, and intimate portrayals.

Gallery Experience: Haitian Art in Revolutions
Join Haitian Art Society board member Matt Dunn for a tour of Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960, where the rich cultural tapestry of Haiti comes alive within the development of modern art through the works of artists Castera Bazile, Rigaud Benoit, and Hector Hyppolite. Dunn will guide visitors through the narratives of these Haitian artists, alongside pieces by figures with deep cultural connections to Haiti, including Cuban-born Wifredo Lam and American Jacob Lawrence.
About the Exhibition
Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960 highlights works from the early half of the Museum’s collection. Working in a time of new technologies, groundbreaking scientific discoveries, and rapidly expanding cities, while also responding to World Wars I and II, artists in both Europe and North America invented dramatically novel approaches to art-making. This period saw the development of abstraction in Western art, the increased use of nontraditional materials, and the rise of conceptualism—the notion that the idea behind an artwork is more important than the art object itself. Many artists used their work to comment on social and political issues; others looked inward, making art that dealt with personal expression or the problems of form. Revolutions is primarily organized chronologically, but it also opens dialogues across history, with select contemporary artworks installed in conversation with modern masterworks to demonstrate how ideas and approaches formulated from 1860 to 1960 remain critical today.
