Agnieszka Polska: Meet the Artist
Polish artist Agnieszka Polska creates immersive, hallucinatory animations that exploit ambiguities of understanding in visual imagery, verbal language, and science. Her work has been shown at Nottingham Contemporary, the Salzburger Kunstverein, and the Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle and is featured in the Hirshhorn’s new exhibition Suspended Animation, which highlights artists who use digitally generated images as a tool to question conceptions of reality. For the latest Meet the Artist program, Polska presents a performative lecture that sums up and expands on her most recent works. A central concern is the materialization of language, which takes many different forms, from the pressure wave of sound moving through the air to the spiritual belief that naming is an act of creation. Polska describes language as a code building up both the physical body and its representation in the virtual world. The lecture will be conducted in a soothing manner, accompanied by a constant stream of filmic images.
