At the Hirshhorn we believe that modern and contemporary art demands a more active viewer. Our conversation-based tours are designed to facilitate visitor interaction with works of art and fit a wide range of audience needs and interests.

Highlights Tours are offered daily at 12:30 pm.

To participate, meet a Gallery Guide at the Information Desk in the Lobby.

To schedule a group tour of the Hirshhorn’s Permanent Collection or Special Exhibitions, please fill out the Tour Request Form at least one month in advance. If you have any questions about scheduling a tour for your group, please contact our Education Department at HMSGeducation@si.edu.

Self-guided tours are welcome. Please register your self-guided tour by filling out the Tour Request Form. For any additional questions about scheduling your tour, please contact the Education Department at HMSGeducation@si.edu.

To ensure student safety and the safety of artworks on display, chaperones must accompany all student groups at all times. Teachers and chaperones are responsible for their students’ behavior. We encourage accompanying adults to support the teacher’s goals for the museum visit and to model active listening.

Both guided and self-guided school groups require the following chaperone-to-student ratios:

  • Grades 1–2: 1 adult per 5 students
  • Grades 3–6: 1 adult per 10 students
  • Grades 7–12: 1 adult per 15 students
