Hirshhorn Plaza

The first exhibition at the new museum displayed 900 works from the permanent collection, which at this early date totaled some 4,000 paintings and 2,000 sculptures from the founding gift of Joseph H. Hirshhorn. Although they ranged in date from the late 18th century to the early 1970s, works of the 20th century predominated in the show, including pieces by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, David Smith, Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Henri Matisse.
