About 35 works in wood, rawhide, and other materials traced Washington-born Martin Puryear’s (b. 1941) evolution as a sculptor from the early 1970s to the present day. Puryear’s metaphorical poetic objects and arrangements echo both functional forms – dwellings, tools, vessels – and his exposure to West African crafts, Scandinavian furniture, and Minimalism.
