Summer Teen Studio: Show Your Colors!

Teens: Are you ready to level up your art? Join us for Teen Studio, a free art-making program exclusively for teens (ages 13–18). Push your artistic boundaries using materials and techniques inspired by the Hirshhorn Museum’s collection of modern and contemporary art.

Join the Art School Color Battle. Drop in and join a color “team,” then make your own colorful artwork inspired by artists on view. Take inspiration from artist Morris Louis, who experimented with pouring paint onto a canvas in his work Buskin (1959). Then work collaboratively with other teens! Let your colors battle it out on the canvas, using paint and gravity to explore color mixing.

Teen Studio: Summer Session is the coolest place in town! It’s exclusively for teens to hang out and make art. Drop in anytime between 2:30 and 4pm. Register once for all summer sessions; join one or join them all!

To register, email HMSGeducation@si.edu. Meet in the Art School on the Lower Level.

ABOUT TEEN STUDIO

Teens (ages 13–18) are invited to hang out and get creative at the Hirshhorn’s Teen Studio. Teen Studio is a free series of art-making workshops offered one Saturday of every month from 2:30 to 4 PM. All skill levels are welcome—from the novice notebook doodler to the experienced teen artist. There’s something for everyone!

Each month, we’ll dive into a fresh theme inspired by artists on view. Each workshop offers a mix of time in the galleries, where we’ll encounter groundbreaking artists, and time in Hirshhorn Art School, where we’ll experiment with new media and materials. Whether you’re into painting, sculpture, 3D design, animation, or something else, you’ll get hands-on experience and unlock new creative skills.

To join Teen Studio, register by emailing HMSGEducation@si.edu. Drop in between 2:30 and 4pm. Register once for all summer sessions; join one or join them all!

If there are services or accommodations that can improve your experience (e.g., ASL interpretation, live captioning, etc.), please contact HMSGeducation@si.edu; one to two weeks’ advance notice is recommended but not required.

Teen Studio: Street Style, Part 2

Teens: Are you ready to level up your art? Join us for Teen Studio, a free art-making program exclusively for teens (ages 13–18). Push your artistic boundaries using materials and techniques inspired by the Hirshhorn Museum’s collection of modern and contemporary art. Each month, we’ll introduce new artists, materials, and opportunities for art-making!

Get ready to dive into the bold, boundary-breaking world of street art and graffiti! In this two-part workshop, we’ll take inspiration from iconic street and graffiti artists on view at the Hirshhorn, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, and OSGEMEOS.

Graffiti art can be a collaborative endeavor. Artists often “riff” off one another, adding layers of characters, words, and images to existing work to expand a story. In part 2, we will explore the exhibition Basquiat x Banksy, then head back to Art School for a Teen Studio “riff-off.”

Although this program is designed to span two sessions on consecutive weekends, we also welcome participants to individual sessions. Feel free to jump into whichever workshop works best for you!

Registration is required; space is limited. To register, email HMSGeducation@si.edu. We ask that registered teens arrive on time and stay for the whole workshop to get the most out of their experience. Meet in the Art School on the Lower Level.

Looking for more? Explore Art School Everywhere, wherever you are, to learn about artists at the Hirshhorn and get creative any time.

Do this at home! Hear from artists OSGEMEOS about their graffiti origins and why they never call it “street art.” Learn more here.

Teens will gain skills and experience in illustration, digital art, and more. Join one session, or join them all!

Free. Workshops take place once a month on Thursdays from 4–5:30 PM. Registration required. Email hmsgeducation@si.edu to register; space is limited.
