Hirshhorn Elects Two New Trustees
Members from Washington, DC and New York Join Largest Board in a Decade
The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is pleased to announce the election of two new trustees at a recent board meeting. The addition of Stephanie Foster of New York and Adam S. Metz of Washington, DC, brings the total membership of the board to 23, up from 12 in 2013. The past year has seen members added from Toronto; Bethesda, Maryland; Chicago; and Los Angeles, in addition to the locations above.
“The Hirshhorn continues to thrive under the direction of Melissa Chiu,” said Peggy Burnet, chair of the museum’s board. “The board is now as large as it has been in a decade, representing greater geographic diversity and our desire for the Hirshhorn to be a truly national and international organization.”
“As we continue to increase the Hirshhorn’s international presence, it is vital that we maintain strong roots in both Washington and New York,” said Dan Sallick, chair of the board’s nominating and governance committee. “We are proud to announce that we now have more board members who are based in the Washington area than at any time in the museum’s history. And a strong New York contingent is a requirement for any institution that maintains a national presence in the contemporary art world.”
“It is only with the leadership and support of a robust board of trustees that we can move forward,” said Chiu, the Hirshhorn’s director. “In order to build a connected and engaging visitor experience, to lead global conversations on the art of our time, and to position ourselves as a creative hub at the intersection of art and technology, we have plans to increase funding and staffing. We are grateful to board members new and old, past and present for helping to make this possible.”
About the New Board Members
Stephanie Foster is a New York-based philanthropist who has retired from a career in the banking industry. She was most recently a director of the U.S. Private Client Services division of Deutsche Bank, having previously worked for Lehman Brothers Inc. and CIBC Oppenheimer. Foster is a trustee of the Asia Society, where she is a member of the finance and budget, investment, and development committees. She and her husband, John, are co-founders of the Asia Society Policy Institute. Foster is a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera and a member of its strategic planning committee. She is a director of the Palm Beach Civic Association.
Adam S. Metz is a Washington, DC-based managing director and the head of international real estate at the Carlyle Group, a global alternative asset manager. He was previously senior advisor to TPG Capital’s real estate group; chief executive officer of General Growth Properties Inc.; co-founding partner of Polaris Capital LLC; and executive vice president and chief investment officer of Rodamco, North America. He began his career in real estate at Urban Shopping Centers Inc.; JMB Realty; and the First National Bank of Chicago. He serves on the advisory boards of the real estate programs at Cornell University and Northwestern University.
