Directions 1986
Feb 06–Mar 30, 1986

This exhibition was the fourth in the Directions series, launched by the Museum in 1979 as a showcase for new works by contemporary artists.
Eight Americans were represented by nearly 40 works in two broad thematic sections. The first, “Toward the Baroque,” focused on artists’ dramatic manipulation of scale, light, and illusionistic spatial devices and included works by James Turrell, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Hope Sandrow. The second section, “Painting into Nature,” presented painterly and fantasized or invented scenes inspired by visions of nature and reflecting the primeval attraction of wilderness, and it included works by Alice Fellows, Melissa Miller, Yolanda Shashaty, and Peter Fleps.
