Purchases by the Hirshhorn Museum, 1974–1983

On view were 64 paintings, 52 sculptures, and 31 works on paper in this exhibition of major works acquired through purchase over the preceding 10 years since the Hirshhorn’s opening. Included were works by Estes, Frankenthaler, Gillespie, Miró, Motherwell, Cornell, di Suvero, Maillol, Gauguin, and Tony Smith. More than 100 artists of the 19th and 20th centuries were represented.
