Markus Lüpertz: Meet the Artist
In conversation with Richard Shiff
Wednesday, May 24
6:30 pm, Ring Auditorium

Previously head of the acclaimed Dusseldorf Art Academy, German artist Markus Lüpertz is internationally recognized as one of the most renowned figures of Neo-Expressionist painting. Working across a variety of media for more than fifty years, he has earned a reputation for probing the expressive possibilities of figuration and imbuing his subjects with both personal and historical resonances. Taking cues from Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and German postwar culture, Lüpertz challenged the limits of painting during a decisive period in his country’s history. On the eve of two groundbreaking exhibition openings—Markus Lüpertz: Threads of History at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and Markus Lüpertz at the Phillips Collection—the artist will recount his historic practice for a special Meet the Artist program in conversation with art historian Richard Shiff.

English translation will be provided for this program.
