Saul Steinberg

This major retrospective included 178 of Steinberg’s (1914-1999) drawings, watercolors, collages, masks, and tables dating from 1945 to the time of the exhibition. The show was first presented in a larger version earlier in 1978 by the Whitney Museum of Art, New York. An addition to the Hirshhorn show were 30 drawings – embellishments of SI letterhead – created by Steinberg in 1967 as Smithsonian artist-in-residence at NCFA.
