Research Requests and Artwork Loans

Artwork Viewing Requests
Please be advised that due to the significant impact of ongoing and upcoming major revitalization projects, exhibitions, and limited resources, we are only accepting artwork viewing requests from artist foundations or estates beginning May 1, 2025 through December 2026.
Visits will be limited to two pre-determined days per month and accepted on a first-come-first serve basis. Visits will also be limited to 5 artworks per visit.
We require 4 months’ notice to schedule onsite artwork viewings. Viewings are dependent on staff availability and artwork accessibility.
Outgoing Loans
The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden maintains an active lending program. Loan requests will be considered from accredited nonprofit national and international museums, institutions, and galleries for the purpose of public exhibition.
Please be advised that due to the significant impact of a large-scale outgoing loans project to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, and the installation of our new sculpture garden, the Hirshhorn will have reduced capacity to accommodate requests to borrow works from our collection through 2025-2026. During this period, we are instituting a loans moratorium for all loans from May 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.
Loan requests that have been approved prior to May 2025 will be honored. We will resume full lending activities from January 1, 2027, and welcome requests for loans beginning after this date. We thank you for your patience at this time.
If you would like to borrow a work of art from the Hirshhorn collection, please send a formal request letter and an updated AAM facility report for your institution at least 12 months prior to the opening of your exhibition. Please limit your request to six objects.
