Europe in the Seventies: Aspects of Recent Art

A full-scale exhibition of avant-garde European art of the 1970s, this show comprised about 60 works (several of which formed components of individual pieces) executed by 23 artists from seven European countries. Included were Expansion, a 50-part graphite drawing by the German artist Klaus Rinke; a one-person airplane (which cannot fly) by Belgian artist Panamarenko; and Igloo, a construction in glass, neon, and steel that Italian artist Mario Merz created especially for the Hirshhorn’s Fountain Plaza, as well as striped banners by French artist Daniel Buren. The exhibition originated at the Art Institute of Chicago.
