Steve Elmendorf and Mark Rosman Join Board of Trustees
The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden recently welcomed two new board members, Steve Elmendorf and Mark Rosman.
“As the Hirshhorn approaches its 40th anniversary in October, we are pleased to announce the election of two board members who have significant ties to the local community and have shown a deep commitment to contemporary art,” said Hirshhorn interim director and chief curator Kerry Brougher.
About the Board Members
Steve Elmendorf, who joined the board in October, is the founder of the Washington government relations firm Elmendorf | Ryan. The firm represents corporations, trade associations, and nonprofit organizations on legislative and regulatory issues. He previously served for twelve years as a senior advisor to House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt. Elmendorf was chief of staff and senior advisor for Gephardt’s 2004 Democratic presidential campaign and deputy campaign manager for Senator John Kerry’s 2004 presidential bid. Elmendorf is chair of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and serves on the Board of Fellows at Trinity College. He is also a member of the board of Whitman-Walker Health, and he serves as co-chair of the Public Policy Committee of the Trevor Project. Steve is an avid collector of Minimal art from the 1960s and 1970s and also collects photography.
Mark Rosman, who became a Hirshhorn trustee in February, is a partner in the Washington office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and a member of the firm’s antitrust practice. Before joining the firm, he served as assistant chief of the National Criminal Enforcement Section in the US Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. For two decades, Mark worked as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice, trying cases before juries in Texas and Florida. He has collected in depth the work of such emerging artists as Jeff Elrod, Robert Lazzarini, Liz Craft and Cory Arcangel, as well as pieces by established artists including Larry Bell, Peter Saul and Olivier Mosset.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian Institution’s museum of international modern and contemporary art, has nearly 12,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, mixed-media installations, works on paper and new media works in its collection.
