“Doug Aitken: SONG 1” Held Over One Week at Hirshhorn

American Institute of Architects and WorldStage, Inc. Enable Extension of 360-Degree Projection’s Run through May 20
On view nightly from sunset to midnight on the façade of the Hirshhorn building since March 22, the groundbreaking installation “SONG 1” by Doug Aitken (American, b. Redondo Beach, Calif., 1968; lives and works in Los Angeles and New York) will have its run extended by one week, through May 20.
“The American Institute of Architects is pleased to partner with the Hirshhorn and WorldStage, Inc., in extending ‘SONG 1’ by Doug Aitken,” said American Institute of Architects executive vice president and chief executive officer Robert Ivy. “When more than 10,000 architects descend on Washington, D.C., in the coming week, they will encounter a dynamic and compelling installation that combines a unique artistic vision with cutting-edge technology to produce a cinematic projection around the entire facade of the powerful drum of Gordon Bunshaft’s modernist Hirshhorn building. It’s the perfect setting for a spring evening.”
“Doug Aitken: SONG 1” is organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution. Artwork courtesy 303 Gallery, New York; Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zürich; Victoria Miro Gallery, London; and Regen Projects, Los Angeles. The installation was generously supported by YoungArts, the core program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and the Hirshhorn Collections Fund.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian Institution’s museum of international modern and contemporary art, has nearly 12,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, mixed-media installations, works on paper and new media works in its collection.
